Deep within the captivating rolling meadows, resided a young shepherd. His existence was here essentially unadulterated, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was to care for his herd of ewes.

Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the gales through the lone tree on the mountaintop were his only associates. Day in day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.

However, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. On one such day because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty scheme.

Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a prank on the townsfolk.

One morning he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but discovered no beast.

The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This prank persisted for a couple of more days. But, one noon, a real wolf actually attack the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the results of dishonesty.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is tough to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
